Why is melamine poisoning people when they eat it, yet they sell dishes made of it?

We used Melmac dishes when I was young. They still sell dishes made of melamine today. Melamine is the additive to milk and now chocolates that is making babies sick. Why is it not ok to eat it but it is ok to eat off of it?
